Help and contact
- Contact
- Write to help@back2back.music, and say who you are — your @handle, or the email address your account uses — what happened and when, and the session’s link if it was during a set. Never your password: we’ll never ask for it.
- A problem in a set
- Report it from the app: open View → Log (⌘L on a Mac, Ctrl+L on Windows), press Report… and say what happened. The app’s log goes with it, and the reply comes to your email address.
- A forgotten password
- On Sign in, press Forgot your password? and we’ll email you a code to set a new one.
- Something that shouldn’t be here
- Telling us about a problem says how to report it, and Copyright and takedowns what to send if it’s your music.
Using the app
Short answers for the parts of the app people ask about most. How it works shows how a session goes on each kind of gear.
- Play on the virtual decks
- Out of a session, press Play on the virtual decks on the start screen to practise on the app’s own decks, with a controller or the keyboard and mouse. It’s there whatever you play on, and nobody else hears it. If your speakers need choosing, that comes first. Press Exit virtual decks when you’re done. Accepting an invitation exits them too.
- Setting up on controllers
- Setting up is up to four steps: your speakers and headphones, with a test sound through each, your controller, its meters, then a check of each deck. Then press Join the session. Joined first? You wait on the decks: load and cue, and PLAY unlocks when the countdown ends. Back to set-up, beside Leave session, takes you back to Ready, still in the session.
- Your controller’s meters
- If your controller has level meters, Back2Back can light them while the decks play. In the set-up’s Meters step, watch each meter climb in turn and tick the ones that did. If asked, mark its lights with the slider and Mark. Skip meters goes on without them, and Find the meters, on Ready, brings you back.
- QUANTIZE and RELEASE
- Both are in the decks’ top row. QUANTIZE keeps hot cues, loops and needle drops on the beat. RELEASE is how fast a record you let go of on the jog comes back to tempo, like a CDJ’s vinyl speed adjust. Each press gives the next time, from Off up to 1.5 s.
- Mapping your mixer on CDJs/ XDJs
- On the Audio step, choose Map it in the soundcheck: about two extra minutes, once. At a handoff the other DJ sees your EQ, and your Instant Double waits for your fader. The soundcheck asks for each channel’s controls in turn, and Skip this one passes any you don’t have. Caught a control wrong? Map this channel again starts that channel over. If your mixer has a MIDI ON button, make sure it’s lit.
- Wi-Fi on as well as your cable
- With your internet on a cable, your sound could go out over the Wi-Fi instead, and Wi-Fi loses sound. The app says so: press Turn Wi-Fi off. On the main screen it’s offered while you’re off-air. On CDJs/ XDJs, the Decks step waits until it’s off. If the app can’t turn it off, press Open Wi-Fi settings and turn it off yourself.
- If you drop out
- If the app quits during a session, open Back2Back again. If your connection drops, wait. Either way it puts you back in the session by itself: the main screen says Rejoining your session, and there’s no need to pause a deck. If the other DJ drops out, keep playing: Hand off is back once they rejoin. Before the set has started, they have 5 minutes to come back, or the session ends. You can’t rejoin a session you left with Leave session.
- Your recordings
- Every session is recorded for the DJs who played it to download, for 3 days after the session ends. Then it’s deleted. Open them from Your recordings on the start screen, Session → Recordings…, or Your recordings on the website.
- Chats
- Chats between DJs, and group chats, aren’t end-to-end encrypted.
- Your music on controllers
- TRACKS opens your music over the decks. Import your rekordbox collection, a rekordbox USB stick, a Music folder or Apple Music. On a Mac, Apple Music is read from the Music app. On Windows, it’s iTunes’ library file. Copy-protected tracks, and tracks only in iCloud, can’t be played.
- Your rekordbox collection
- Back2Back follows the collection file rekordbox writes
with XML Auto Export, and reads it again each time rekordbox closes. Where your Apple Music import has the same file, you
see Music’s titles and tags with rekordbox’s beat grids, cues, key and colours. To turn it on in rekordbox:
- Open Preferences > Advanced > Others. Under Tribe XR, turn on XML Auto Export, and set where the file goes to the folder the app shows you (make it if it isn’t there).
- In Preferences > Advanced > Database, under rekordbox xml, turn on Export BeatGrid information, so your beat grids come with it.
- Close rekordbox. It writes the file as it closes.
- In Back2Back, press rekordbox collection in TRACKS.
